What is Samhain? Samhain originated in Ireland with the ancient Celtic people, who celebrated it to mark the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the Pagan new year on October 31st. This pre-Christian festival, observed across Ireland and Britain, holds significant cultural importance and is recognized as the parent of modern Halloween. Many of today’s Halloween traditions were brought to the United States by Irish immigrants in the mid-1800s--Trust me, the scariest Jack o’ Lantern is quaint compared to a turnip carved by the Irish! Some of the key themes of Samhain are the veneration and remembrance of ancestors (including healing generational wounds); self-reflection; and transformation and new beginnings.
